Creating Mission, Vision, and Values Statements

Can you believe it’s already February? Do you have your mission, vision, and values statements prepared? So many business leaders start with their heads IN the business and have not taken the time to focus ON the business. Well, 2020 is the year!

MISSION The idea is to think about why your company exists and what you aim to do. The mission statement should be one or two sentences that describe why you are in business.

VISION Decision making should be based on your objectives. What do you want your company to accomplish over time? Don’t make it complicated.  Keep it inspirational and concise.

VALUES What are your principles and standards? These will dictate the tone and structure for developing the culture of your organization. Your values will support the mission and vision of your company.

You can have a personal mission, a family mission, and a business mission.  Don’t just stop at one. They can all be intertwined. It’s a fun exercise to do with your spouse and your coworkers! To many people, this process seems daunting and unproductive, but you will quickly realize it’s the opposite! Here are some helpful tips to get you started:

  • Make it fun
  • Don’t do it alone
  • Get feedback and support
  • Have a brainstorming session with your group
  • Determine who is ultimately responsible for the finished product
  • Set a deadline to have it all completed
  • Revisit it every 2–5 years.

You are looking for progress, not perfection!

“Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.”

John F. Kennedy
When business gets better, life gets better.
