Start early.
If your lease is up next year, give yourself at least six months to execute your plan. Everything takes longer than you think, especially with supply chain and shipping delays worse than ever. Furniture and appliances have long wait times, and most contractors do as well. Shop around for recommendations so that you can align calendars in advance for things like repairs, built-ins, and floorplan reconfigurations.
Map out your space goals.
To create a space where you and your team enjoy working daily, start by listing what’s important to everyone, like shared open spaces, private spaces, storage, lighting, break room, parking, and furniture. Do you want traditional or standing desks? Do you need closed meeting spaces? How many bathrooms? Involving your team in decision-making increases their investment in the business and its future.
Map out your move-in timeline.
Start with the end in mind. If you must be out of your current space on November 1, start on October 1 and work your way backward. Make a list of the first things that need to happen – inspections and new leases and the last things – change of address notices and new business cards. Don’t forget essential services like internet, pest control, security, IT, and cleaning.
